Measures to prevent global climate change

Reducing greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions at our facilities

More details

In 2018, gross emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the air (CO2 -EQ.) for TATNEFT Group amounted to 2,950,862 tonnes. The bulk of emissions into the atmosphere are attributed to the upstream segment (80%). Therefore, the measures are aimed primarily at the rational use of associated petroleum gas (APG) and reducing the volume of its flaring.

Utilization Project of Landfill Gas for Landfills of Solid Municipal Waste

In order to reduce emissions of «landfill gases» into the atmosphere, the Company is implementing the project on the Utilization of Landfill Gas for Landfills of Solid Municipal Waste (SMW). This project aims to collect and use landfill gas, which will not only reduce the anthropogenic pressure on the environment in the area of the SMW landfill, but also reduce the risk of climate change.

Within the framework of the Utilization Project of Landfill Gas for Landfills of SMW (Solid Municipal Waste), the following types of work were performed:

  • The base project on the Utilization of Landfill Gas was developed and agreed at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan.
  • An investment project on the Utilization of Landfill Gas for SMW Landfills has been developed.
  • Meetings were held with representatives of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, executive committees of the cities of Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhnekamsk on the selection of a landfill for landfill gas utilization.
  • Together with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Executive Committee of Kazan, a pilot landfill was selected — the former CJSC KEK Samosyrovo; today the SMW landfill belongs to the Executive Committee of Kazan.
  • The research of the landfill by TatNIPIneft and LLC Prombiogaz on methane productivity of the landfill was carried out.

Currently, regulations are being developed for the design of a degassing unit and design documentation for the degassing of a SMW landfill for a selected landfill.

TATNEFT is developing a corporate system for accounting and managing greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2018, the Company began to implement a system of accounting and inventory of greenhouse gases in accordance with the new requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation and international climate change standards.

Rational use of associated petroleum gas (APG)

In 2018, the level of the APG effective utilization throughout TATNEFT Group was at 96.24%. This allowed reducing emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases from APG flaring and dispersion.

The level of associated petroleum gas use at TATNEFT exceeds 96% — this is one of the highest rates in the industry, which the Company plans to increase to 98%.

More details

The main activities for APG disposal are processing at the production facilities of the Company and further products delivery to the consumers. For the purpose of APG disposal and reduction of negative impact on atmospheric air, Tatneft Group ensures the following:

  • construction of facilities intended for the use of associated petroleum gas as well as their technical reequipping, reconstruction, and modernization;
  • reduction of losses of hydrocarbon raw materials, growth of processing volumes thereof, increasing the energy efficiency of production;
  • implementation of measures to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from oil storage and treatment tanks;
  • carrying out performance-and-commissioning works on the fuel-burning equipment;
  • monitoring the efficiency of gas treatment plants operation, current and preventive maintenance thereof;
  • implementation of measures to control emissions during adverse weather conditions;
  • gas fuel conversion of vehicles.

In 2018, major overhaul of 24,263 km of gas pipelines was carried out; in order to increase gas collecting, 32,164 km of gas pipelines were constructed; the reconstruction of the flare systems at the facilities of Oil and Gas Field Operating Division was continued, which will allow for sootless flaring; construction continued on the all-factory flare system of the Minnibayevo Gas Processing Plant of UTNGP of PJSC Tatneft.

Development and application of adaptable technologies

In order to reduce its environmental impact, the Company develops its own technologies and equipment, and also implements proven innovative methods that have proven their effectiveness. This can significantly prevent and reduce air emissions.

More details

The company directs efforts in the following areas:

  • Introduction of advanced technologies to reduce emissions and capture emissions into the atmosphere;
  • Emission reduction;
  • Improving the efficiency of systems for accounting and control of greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Search for effective solutions for the safe disposal of greenhouse gases;
  • Efficient use of associated petroleum gas;
  • Improving energy efficiency of production operations;
  • The development of low-carbon energy sources, such as gas, renewable sources, biofuels;
  • Production and use of environmentally friendly fuels.

Production of products that reduce CO2 emissions

The company is committed to producing products that will help reduce carbon footprint. The Company also takes this factor into account in the supply chain.

Improving Energy Efficiency and Resource Saving

The Company implements a target program to reduce the fuel and energy resource consumption. Since the start of the program in 2010, more than 464 thousand tonnes of fuel equivalent were saved.

More details

The most efficient saving areas are: oil and gas treatment, processing, transportation, oil and gas production technology, reservoir pressure maintenance.

The cost of fuel and energy resources, saved as a result of the energy saving program implementation in 2011–2018, amounted to RUB 5.1 billion (including: electricity RUB 2.9 billion, heat energy RUB 1 billion, boiler fuel RUB 0.8 billion, combustibles and lubricants RUB 0.4 billion). Following the energy saving program implementation in 2018, the TATNEFT Group enterprises saved more than 47.7 thousand tonnes of fuel equivalent, which amounted to RUB 842.5 million and allowed a 0.8% reduction in the Company’s need for fuel and energy resources. The main energy savings were obtained by saving electricity.

Energy production using renewable energy sources

The main share (99.9%) of energy production from renewable energy sources (RES) in the TATNEFT Group accounts for the heat energy generation by pellet boiler houses, 0.01% — by the solar power plants of the Company’s retail trade network, in 2018 the boiler house installed capacity was 1,778 Gcal/hour. The total energy production from RES in 2018 amounted to 2,054.7 tonnes of fuel equivalent or 0.24% of the total TATNEFT Group energy production.

Reforestation

As part of addressing the tasks of reducing the carbon footprint, one of the most effective areas of the Company is the Reforestation Program. Currently, the Company has planted more than 9 million green spaces, which is about 5,000 hectares of forest. The program has been implemented since 2008 and aims to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions produced by TATNEFT Group enterprises due to the absorption capacity of forests.

More details

The program covers all areas of the Company’s core business and takes into account the maximum possible absorption capacity of forests. The program includes the following targeted areas:

  • landscaping of lanes along public roads, field roads in the oil regions of Tatarstan;
  • «green» gas stations;
  • creation of greenbelts around industrial facilities;
  • development of green park zones and squares in cities and towns;
  • improvement of the green infrastructure of social facilities (health care facilities, educational institutions; sports facilities).

In this direction, the Company sees a significant potential of anthropogenic net absorption of greenhouse gases by forests.
