Environmental activities

The Company implements the Environmental Program developed for the period up to 2020, which aims to maintain the state of the environment in the region of the Company’s operation at the standard admissible level corresponding to the natural ecosystems’ potential for self-recovery.

2018 Priorities

  • To reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere, discharges of pollutants into underground and surface water bodies, soil, and subsoil and to ensure compliance with the established norms of permissible impact on the environment.
  • Maintaining the technical condition of oilfield equipment at the appropriate level, the introduction of advanced and innovative environmental technologies.
  • Implementation of the reforestation program in the territories of the Company.

2019 Priorities

  • Updating the Tatneft Group’s Environmental Program, taking into account the new regulatory standards, including the categorization of NVOS facilities (negative impact on the environment).
  • Opening of the target project «Best Available Technologies” at various stages of production activity, including the procurement of technologies, materials and equipment.
  • Improvement of industrial environmental control, eco-monitoring, assessment of the environmental impact of the Company’s business activities.
  • Participation in international, national and regional environmental programs, projects and ratings aimed at achieving sustainable development.
On January 1, 2019, a large package of amendments to the Law on Environmental Protection (No. 219-FZ) came into force, establishing new rules for environmental regulation. One of the key element in the new rules is the application of the best available technologies (BAT). The requirement is aimed at reducing the negative impact on the environment. The Company participated in the development of the BAT Guide for the oil industry and is implementing a targeted project for the use of BAT in its activities.
Air protection

One of the key areas for minimizing the environmental impact is the reduction of atmospheric emissions during the Company’s production activities.

As a result of air protection efforts taken in 2018, the Company reduced the emission of pollutants into the air by 12.6% to the level of 94.036 thousand tons. Since 2016, harmful emissions into the air from stationary sources for TATNEFT Group had been reduced by 26.5%.

44 light hydrocarbons recovery units are currently operating at the Company’s facilities; the volume of recovered hydrocarbons was 24,700 tons in 2018. In general, since the introduction of vapor recovery units, since 1991, the Company has reduced its hydrocarbon emissions by 4 times.
